Sound Relief

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009

i just got back from australia where ej and i played at a benefit concert for the terrible bush fires that swept across Victoria earlier this year.
it was an amazing even with 80,000 people coming out to support the cause. Ironically it rained all day…
actually, it fined up for ej’s and my brief set…and the sun showed it’s face when elroy, nick dad and tim hit the stage… and completely cleared up for reformed Hunters and Collectors, Split Enz and Midnight Oil.
truly spectacular!

Camp A Low Hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009

“Camp a low hum” is a small alternative music festival in New Zealand. It has been held on Waitangi weekend for the past 3 year.
Each one has been held in a different old school camp out in the lush forest near Wellington. There are only about 800 people (bands and fans) who attend and most people camp…. us lucky bands get crusty old bunk rooms… but with the collective understanding that you can sleeps loads when you’re dead there is not much use for the beds anyway.
The music is mostly underground arty bands and performers from across all of NZ, with a few Australian Americans and European acts thrown in the barrel this year.
The main man behind it all is an inspiring independent music champion called Blink…. his plan was to create the compete antithesis to all the horrible corporate music festivals we subject ourselves to… with massive crowds, burly security, crap bands, back stage passes and lack of toilets.
A lot of the success of this festival is purely based on trust between Blink, the bands and the audience looking out for each other. Blinks only rule at camp is “don’t be a dick”
None of the bands are announced to the public before the festival nor paid to be there… and anyone can even put on secret shows in the middle of the bush by taking a generator out there, making some posters in the arts and crafts room (seriously!!) to put around camp and then making the party happen!
i’m getting so excited just writing about it that my thoughts are racing faster than my fingers can type. check out www.campalowhum.co.nz to hear more about
